Oklahoma Living

Because Oklahoma is not known as being the most exciting place in the world to live, we Okies have to come up with ways to entertain ourselves. One of our favorite weekend pasttimes is taking a leisurely drive through the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. We enjoy being out in the country and scouring the pastures for Oklahoma wildlife.
Buffalo.....

Longhorns...Prairie dogs....
We also enjoy ending our drive at Meers, a ramshackle restraunt in the middle of nowhere that is hugely popular for it's longhorn burgers and homemade icecream and cobbler. Yum! This past weekend we had perfect weather for this Starling family ritual. The skies were clear, the sun was shining, it was warm but not hot, and for once it wasn't very windy! The only difference about this drive, was that the family wasn't all together. Sammie and I got the pleasure of driving behind Jim while he rode his new motorcycle! Woohoo! Actually, it was pretty fun seeing Jim ride around and be happy on his bike. Since he was ahead of us on the road he would point out the wildlife as he drove by so that we wouldn't miss them. We arrived at Meers at 11:30 but it was already packed because everyone else who was out enjoying the day had already arrived. So instead we drove to nearby Medicine Park and had a great lunch outside and took a stroll along the river. Again, we took in the wildlife which included giant catfish, ducks, and turtles sunning on some rocks. Oh, and a stray cat which Sammie loooooved. Cool. I didn't get any pictures of the walk at the river, but here are a few from our drive through the wildlife refuge.
Here is Sammie taking off on her own after feeding the prairie dogs. Well, we fed the prairie dogs because Sammie kept eating the bread that we gave her to toss to the dogs. Hmmm, she does the same thing when we go to feed the ducks. Sammie ends up munching on the stale bread instead of giving it to the ducks!

We visited Lawton once, when I was 10 years old. My dad drove our brown station wagon into a herd of buffalo, opened up the hatchback and hit record on his tape recorder. Then on the long drive back to Georgia, he played us the tape of the moo-ing and shuffling buffalo. That memory just flooded my brain when I saw your photo of the bison. Hope you got some good, audio, too.
