Chocolate Chip Yumminess and Potty Training

I made some chocolate chip cookies and had a most eager cookie taster!
Look at those big, brown eyes! Wonder where she got those from...

This next picture proves that Sammie is really my daughter and Erin's niece. Erin and I both have too many pictures to count where we look exactly like this!

Sammie will turn 2 on the 27th of this month! I can hardly believe that my little baby is almost 2 years old! Lately she has been playing "baby" though and likes to crawl around and pull on our legs. I thought she'd wait until her baby brother or sister came along to start playing those games, but it seems that she has reverted back to babyhood early!

We attempted potty training again today and I really don't know how anyone does it. I had her potty chair in front of the tv and she sat on it and drank juice and ate snacks, but there's only so much of kiddie videos and constant naked bum/potty watching I can take! She did go once in her potty chair which we were both very excited about. I was excited because she made it in the chair and Sammie was excited because she saw that her pee was yellow! Of course there were accidents too, and that is to be expected, but just watching and waiting and asking her every 5 minutes if she has to go potty drives me crazy! I guess I just have to keep trying so that she learns how to tell if she has to go or not, because right now, I don't think she can tell. Any advice from someone who's done this before? She does know that she gets some stickers if she goes potty in her potty chair, so we do have a little reward system in place....but, well, if anyone else has any tips I'd love to hear them! I'd really like for her to be potty trained by the time the next kiddo comes in January.

Good luck! I've tried off and on with not much success. I just decided to crack down though this week since Anna is approaching 2 1/2 and have had Anna wearing underwear while we are at home. So far today she has gone once in the potty and 3 times on the floor. Lots of fun. I had a friend do this though and she said after a couple of days it worked so we will see. Sammie is definitely young so I wouldn't stress too much. If you read the Sisterhood's Guide to Toddlers she says not to start until they are 3 1/2 when they can do everything themselves (pants down, get on the potty, wipe, wash hands, etc.)

Just know that I'm feeling your frustration as well!

I'm sure I could find a good half-closed eye picture of you to post. And Erin too. You girls in the matching Germany dresses comes to mind.

You know I'm potty-training crazy, so take my comments as you will. Right now, as I'm typing, Caleb announced that he has to go peepee. He walked to the bathroom, pulled his pants down, went potty, and he'll be back in here in a minute. I don't know why the "Sisterhood" book would say this isn't possible until toddlers are 3 1/2. If he poops, he does need my help to wipe him, but he always calls to me, asking me to wipe him. Anyways, my advice would be to go bare bottom for a while. Commit to several days, 3 at a minimum, but a week would be good. It's easier in the summer when you can just put a long shirt or dress on her and she doesn't have to deal with pulling up undies. Also don't make a big deal about it, just announce what is going on when you see her peeing (even if it's on the floor) and tell her that pee goes in the potty. Then take her. Try not to get too upset about accidents. And I'm not crazy about lots of rewards. Try just using praise first, move to stickers if you really want to. Otherwise just take her every 30 minutes and make a psss sound when you do. Keep a close eye on her and if you see her straining at all, run her to the potty and tell her to poop, and make a grunting sound. Also- the book Early Start Potty Training has a good section for 2 year olds...I think one of the most important factors is to realize how important you are in the process. She's not going to be able to figure it out herself, so try not to get mad at her. I also like calling them "catches" and "misses" so the onus, and the joy of success, is on you as well as the child. Just know that she can do it with your help, maybe not for a few more months, but she can. Until then, don't let her on the couch w/o a towel underneath her.

Hi, Joni! I just found your blog the other day. It's so fun that we're right on the same track with our 2 year olds and seconds coming in January :) I am getting closer to starting the potty training thing and am closely observing friends in the midst of it. Our doc says that if the kiddo doesn't take to it within a couple of days, pack up and try again in 3 weeks or so. I have also heard good things about the bare bottom approach. At least for boys, it really helps them be more aware of their bodies. A friend of mine trained her (almost 3 year old) son last week. TONS of accidents the first day, but by day 4, he was almost there. Good luck!!!

Spikes!

Sammie's got a cool do. She's 9 months old here.
